Never have ‘fakes’ been more prevalent — or are they?

The UWA Cultural Precinct will launch their 2019 WINTERarts program with an expert panel for breakfast as they dive deep into the world of fakes: fake news, fake identities, fake art.

The panel will address the questions:

  • How do we separate the fakes?
  • Does the role of technology assist with unearthing authenticity, or add to the problem?
  • What are the conventions that allow actors and politicians to fake sincerity?
  • Do emotions technologies measure sincerity or do they capture the so-called biological or basic emotions in a fairly primitive way?
  • With studios getting over the uncanny valley hurdle, what are the legal implications, and how do we respond to the ethical dilemmas?
  • Why does manufactured reality seem more real?
  • And when is a fake desirable?

  • Professor Ted Snell AM, Chief Cultural Officer, UWA
  • Dr David Glance, Director of UWA Centre for Software Practice
  • A/ Prof Jani McCutcheon, Associate Professor, UWA Law School
  • A/ Prof Kathryn Prince, Director of the UWA Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies
