Lana Starkey is a PhD candidate in the School of Arts and Communication at The University of Queensland under the supervision of Peter Holbrook. She completed her BA (Hons) at The University of Queensland in 2012. In her honours thesis Lana focused on the Greek ethic of moderation in Albert Camus’s essays ‘The Myth of Sisyphus’ and ‘The Rebel’. Lana’s current research examines the essay as a genre in seventeenth-century England. Her thesis suggests that at this time the essay was a genre linked to scepticism and religious toleration, and that the form culminated in an eighteenth-century public literature concerned with style, manners and wit.
