West Australian Opera Company

The West Australian Opera Company has partnered with the Centre for the History of Emotions to undertake a historically-informed production to explore the focus seventeenth and eighteenth century musicians placed on expressing the passions.

The West Australian Opera Company is one of the nation's providers of international calibre live music and theatre.

It has partnered with the Centre for the History of Emotions to undertake a historically-informed production to explore the focus seventeenth and eighteenth century musicians placed on expressing the passions - the emotional states of the human soul - through words, images and sounds. Ideas about how these passions could be conveyed in music developed alongside understandings of how emotions work both psychologically and physiologically.

These elements are to be investigated in a project culminating in an opera production in 2015. The research will explore the techniques through which emotions were expressed in performance through rhetorical devices that were written into poetry and music, and projected in singing and acting through a systematic art of rhetorical delivery, using both voice and gesture.

Further information will be made available as this project progresses.
