Beatus vir and Gloria are two of Vivaldi’s most beautiful and moving choral works. Set within the magnificent St Paul’s Cathedral, and using magical visual imagery, these spellbinding performances offer unique experiences of uplifting emotion.
Featuring the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music’s Early Voices and Baroque Ensemble, Gloria also boasts the accomplished creative team of Jane Davidson as creative director, and Stephen Grant and Erin Helyard as musical directors.
The significant overlap of sacred and secular domains of life in the baroque period offers inspiring and challenging repertoire in music. Following a trend of enacting sacred works, we have engaged with Vivaldi’s sacred choral legacy to develop this performance project.
Staging these works in the spiritual context of the Cathedral adds a further emotional dimension to the performances. The lighting, costumes and set design explore themes of exaltation and hope, as well as the challenges of being a ‘good’ human. The historical concept of the harmony of the spheres and the virtuous circle have also been woven into the work.
Gloria is set to be an all-sensory experience of historic architectural beauty, modern visual spectacle, orchestral music, and the timeless genius of Vivaldi.
Please be aware that this performance features the use of strobe and other lighting effects.
