Children engage with historical sources in the form of oil paintings, through the gateway of colour-emotion relationships. They respond to images and participate in discussion to gain an understanding of how the choice of colour communicates an artist’s intention. Discussion points include the similarities and differences between emotional experiences then and now, and the differences in colour-emotion associations between individuals and cultures. Opportunity is given for the children to create their own art piece using what they have learned from responding to several famous historical artworks.
Presenter Wendy Norman is one of the Education and Outreach Officers for the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions at The University of Adelaide.
